40th & Monroe Sewer Separation

KC Water is working to separate approximately 220 acres of the City’s combined sewer system and eliminate select outfalls and/or diversion structures. During design, DuBois Consultants provided civil engineering services including utility coordination, sanitary and storm sewer design, and water main relocation. Our team designed a total of 5,020 LF of the water main replacement which aimed to replace break-prone and obsolete water mains that conflicted with the proposed storm sewer system. Currently, we are providing construction phase engineering services. Our lead civil inspector is on site daily to observe the construction process.

Inflow/Infiltration Reduction: Northern Basin

The City of Kansas City required a comprehensive review of CCTV and manhole inspection data, smoke testing results, and field investigations to assess the sanitary sewer collection system. The project aimed to identify and quantify structural deficiencies, then develop rehabilitation recommendations and construction documents to reduce basement backups and inflow/infiltration (I/I) within the system. DuBois Consultants calculated I/I for manholes, pipes, and service laterals. These calculations informed a repair schedule for approximately 14,000 LF of sewer lines. The civil team also provided construction observation services to ensure all repairs and main replacements complied with Smart Sewer guidelines.

Todd Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Facility Plan

The existing Todd Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility is being upgraded to treat 8.7 MGD to meet projected demands in the year 2050. The influent pump station, splitter, and grit removal systems are being upgraded to meet current MDNR standards, and a SCADA system is included in the facility plan. DuBois Consultants is providing civil and structural engineering and design services that encompass all site grading, stormwater, and water infrastructure. Our civil team developed the Erosion and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans, and our structural team designed the influent pumping station vault, effluent meter, and aeration structures. Upon completion of the final design, the project was relocated to a new site. DuBois Consultants is currently working on the redesign process of the facility plan to tailor it to the new location.

Smart Sewer Program

Kansas City’s Smart Sewer Program (SSP) is a long-term initiative to modernize the city’s aging sewer infrastructure, reduce overflows, and improve water quality. The program includes neighborhood and annual sewer rehabilitation, green infrastructure for stormwater management, and overflow control systems to protect residents and waterways. DuBois Consultants has been involved in the SSP since 2011, and we have an in-house hydraulic modeling Subject Matter Expert (SME) who models sewer and stormwater systems across Kansas City. Over the past decade, our team has provided hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) model updates, network builds, calibration, analysis, and more on a large variety of projects across Kansas City.

Wichita Plant 2 BNR Improvements

The City of Wichita, KS, operates five wastewater treatment facilities referred to as Plants 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Beginning in 2021, the City sought to make significant biological nutrient removal (BNR) improvements at Plant 2. DuBois Consultants was tasked with significant structural assessments, evaluations, and repairs at the plant, including modifying previously designed foundations, pipe support routes and their foundations, new pipe support locations, and checking the capacity of the existing thickening building and tunnel. Additionally, we performed a structural assessment of the clarifier and basin walls for concrete repairs, as well as the Plant’s air lock tunnel, boiler room, digesters, and sludge holding tanks. Currently, we are in the construction phase of the project, where we continue to support with timely responses to shop drawings, RFIs, and site visits to perform inspections.
