New Kansas City International Single Terminal
The City of Kansas City, MO, replaced the outdated Kansas City International (KCI) Airport Terminals A, B, and C with a new single, consolidated terminal complex. DuBois Consultants provided structural engineering, design, and construction administration services for both the Central Utility Plant and the Terminal. As the Structural Engineer-of-Record for the Central Utility Plant, we led design efforts and provided ongoing CA support. At the Terminal, our work included foundation systems, concrete superstructure, masonry walls, and the severe weather area. Our team also supported design-build pile reviews and maintained a consistent on-site presence during construction.

Taxiway D and A-1 Extension - Colonel James Jabara Airport
The Wichita Airport Authority aimed to enhance operations at Colonel James Jabara Airport in Wichita, KS, by undertaking several key improvements. These included extending Taxiway A-1 and constructing a new apron to support a hangar complex south of the Wichita State University Tech campus. In addition, the project involved the construction of Taxiway D and a comprehensive study of an undeveloped area, Parcel 5, with a focus on utilities and drainage infrastructure. DuBois Consultants was engaged as a subconsultant to deliver civil engineering and design services for the project. Our scope included the development of both preliminary and final designs for erosion control plans for Taxiway D and Taxiway A-1, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and optimizing the long-term performance of these critical airport infrastructure elements.

MCI Terminal “The Air Up There” Art Structural Evaluation
Inside the new Kansas City International Airport, an art installation called “The Air Up There” by artist Nick Cave was installed in 2023. The artwork is a kinetic sculpture made from thousands of colorful wind spinners was suspended from the 65-foot ceiling, but it was promptly removed after a spinner fell in October 2024. DuBois Consultants, as part of the Aviation Facilities Development on-call contract, was asked to evaluate the art installation’s clips, cables, clasps, metal spinners, hole fasteners, and more to determine what caused the spinner to fall. Our structural team provided a formal report with a summary of our conclusions and recommendations. DuBois Consultants was also asked to conduct structural analyses of additional existing artwork in and around the Kansas City International Airport.

MCI New Terminal Baggage Handling System
At the new Kansas City International Airport that opened in 2023, DuBois Consultants had the opportunity to provide professional engineering services on the Central Baggage Information System (CBIS). Our structural team provided the design for the structural steel platform located in the CBIS area, as well as all drawings and specifications necessary to fabricate and erect the platform. DuBois Consultants also conducted reviews of the layout, header-steel, point load, typical, and special drawings.

MCI New Terminal Landside Surface Parking Areas
The new Kansas City International Airport opened in 2023, and DuBois Consultants played an important role by providing both civil and structural engineering services across multiple aspects of the project. As a civil subconsultant, our team delivered landside civil design services for the new terminal’s surface parking areas. We handled grading, stormwater evaluation, drainage, and related design elements to create an accessible, efficient, and user-friendly parking lot that now serves the millions of passengers traveling through Kansas City each year.

KCI Overhaul Base Hangar Roof Investigation
The Kansas City Aviation Department enlisted the support of engineering consultants to inspect the structural sufficiency of the Narrow Body Hangar and Super Hangar at the KCI Maintenance and Repair Base. Specifically, the City sought written recommendations for any necessary maintenance, services, or repairs to the hangar roof structures. DuBois Consultants was brought on as a subconsultant for structural engineering services where we assisted in the assessment of the structural roof framing of the Narrow Body Hangar.

MKC Downtown Airport Facility Evaluation
DuBois Consultants is part of the current team on the 5-year IDIQ contract with the Kansas City Aviation Department, which encompasses a wide range of services, including airport analysis, bid and construction administration support, development of specific project plans, spot design services, and more. For our 5th task under the contract, DuBois Consultants is performing a study and assessment of an existing hangar at the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (MKC). The purpose of the study is to evaluate the impact of removing a portion of the hangar, to determine the structural integrity of the remaining portion of the hangar following removal, and also to provide recommendations for closing the remaining hangar. The hangar is located on the west side of the airport.

MKC Terminal Re-Roof Design
As part of a previous Aviation Department Facilities contract, the Kansas City Aviation Department solicited architectural and engineering services to repair the East Barrel and Rotunda roofs of the terminal building at the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (MKC). DuBois Consultants supported the prime consultant with structural engineering services. Specifically, our team conducted thorough site inspections, structural reviews, and provided the design of repairs to the concrete and metal deck in the affected areas.

Parking Garage Inspections at KCI Airport
The former Kansas City International Airport had three elevated parking structures located at Terminals A, B, and C. In 2015, the Kansas City Aviation Department enlisted engineering support to conduct a periodic inspection of the structures. DuBois Consultants served as a subconsultant providing structural engineering services. Within our scope, our team reviewed previous and existing records, performed field investigations and inspections of the structures, and produced a final report summarizing our findings and recommendations for necessary repairs.

KCI Terminal C Holdroom Expansion
The Kansas City Aviation Department sought to expand Terminal C within the Kansas City International Airport. The expansion, between Column Rows 55 and 57, was aimed at accommodating a new baggage handling conveyor at the apron level. The one-story addition featured masonry walls with roof framing composed of bar joists and metal decking. DuBois Consultants assisted the project architect with structural design support, including evaluation of the PSL level for new floor penetration, design of the new one-story masonry enclosure, preparation of construction documents, and support during the bid and construction phases of the project.

KCI Consolidated Rental Car Facility
Many years ago, the Kansas City Aviation Department contracted for a new consolidated rental car facility to provide better customer service, lower operating costs, and decreased congestion from the gate to the car rental terminal. DuBois Consultants served as Structural Engineer-of-Record, providing design services that includes a 50,000 square foot 3-story terminal building that incorporated a central waiting area, registration desk, office facilities, vending area, and restrooms. An 8,000 square foot maintenance building was designed to service the vehicle fleets. Additionally, 2-story 5,000 square foot buildings were also designed for office facilities. The structural team also designed an 8,000 space post- tension parking deck to store rental cars. In total, one terminal building and 11 service buildings were designed for this project.
